Degen Culture: Where the Term Came From and How It Went Mainstream

Degen culture origins and how the term went mainstream

"Degen" didn't start in crypto, and it definitely wasn't coined by marketing. It's a word that got adopted, reshaped, and eventually worn with pride by an entire subculture — here's how that actually happened.

The Pre-Crypto Roots

"Degenerate gambler" is old slang from poker rooms and sports betting circles, used as an insult for someone who couldn't stop chasing losses. It carried real stigma. Nobody was proud to be called a degenerate before crypto got involved.

DeFi Summer Gave It a New Home

During the 2020 DeFi boom, a wave of new yield farms and liquidity pools launched faster than anyone could evaluate them properly. Traders who jumped in anyway, chasing triple-digit yields on protocols that were days old, started calling themselves degens as a joke — an honest admission that they knew the risk and did it anyway. The insult became a shared identity almost overnight.

The Meme Coin Boom Made It Unavoidable

As meme coins exploded in popularity, the degen label spread past DeFi and became the default term for anyone chasing hype-driven, high-risk plays across the entire market. It stopped being a niche DeFi-farmer term and became the umbrella word for the whole culture of fast, loud, meme-fueled trading.

How "Ape" Culture and Degen Culture Merged

Around the same time, NFT culture was building its own identity around the word "ape," largely thanks to collections that made owning an ape avatar a status symbol. The two cultures overlapped heavily — the same people aping into NFTs were often the ones degening into meme coins — and the vocabulary blended together into one shared crypto-native language.

From Insult to Identity

What makes "degen" different from most slang is that it survived being turned into merchandise, community names, and brand identities without losing its edge. Wearing the label now signals that you know exactly what you're doing and you're not pretending otherwise — which is a very different thing from the shame the original term carried.

The Degen Take

Culture doesn't usually get to choose its own name — it gets handed one, often as an insult, and either buries it or owns it. Crypto chose to own this one completely.
